BRAZIL: MST puts agrarian minister under spotlight

Damages caused to a productive farm invaded by landless peasants from the Movimento dos Sem Terra (MST) in the state of São Paulo put the agrarian development minister, Guilherme Cassel, in the hot seat only days after the government manoeuvred to prevent the launching of a parliamentary enquiry into illegal disbursements to the MST. Significantly, the invasion led to criticism of the minister's proposals to change the so-called land productivity index, which serves as a measurement for government seizure of private-owned farms for distribution to landless peasants.
